Madrigal in Elegy

Golden Helios Frieze

Oh, passerby, stay and mourn
these discarded sunflowers,
who once followed Helios
in his course across the sky--
his bristling steeds trampling clouds--
and now lie, thin necks broken,
in rusted mesh garbage can--
heads shriveled, no more admired--
for lazy dogs to piss on.
